Details

Bud Love Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) is a 7,900 acre tract located nine miles from Buffalo, Wyoming that offers a small, free camping area. The Bud Love WHMA was created in 1970 to preserve essential winter habitat for large game like elk and mule deer.

Camping at Bud Love WHMA is at the far corner (coming from Buffalo). The camping area is not “improved” at all and is simply a grassy area by the entrance gate and information signs. There is room for at least several rigs in the camping area, but there was nobody else there when we visited. Camping is limited to 14 days.

There are no amenities at this camping area. An unofficial fire pit has been built, however. The area is very quiet and offers wildlife viewing opportunities. A one-lane primitive road allows access further back into the WHMA, but may require a vehicle with high ground clearance.

Cell coverage is not great at this area. We had four “bars” on Verizon and one “bar” on AT&T. The AT&T was not usable for data, and the Verizon was slow. Our speed test attempt on both networks failed. Sending multimedia messages was possible on Verizon, but very slow.
