Details

Camp among Scottish Highland cattle in a Ponderosa pine forest. This northeast Wyoming campsite is different from many that we review in that it is located on a private, family ranch. It is named “Dogcamp” because of the numerous prairie dogs nearby.

Dogcamp is a primitive campsite, but it does have several amenities, including an open-air vault toilet, trash can, and fire pit. Firewood was provided as a courtesy while we were there.

The feature that stood out the most to us, however, was the peace and quiet of the place. Debra described the experience at Dogcamp as “restful.” Aside from some occasional, faint traffic noise from a distant dirt road, the only sounds were of the forest.

Dogcamp also introduced us to the Hipcamp website. Hipcamp provides listings of unique camping opportunities like ranches, farms, vineyards, and nature preserves. Campsites may be reserved directly through the Hipcamp website.

Directions

Access to Dogcamp is via a maintained, gravel county road and a dirt road into the property. The coordinates above are to the Oshoto Community Building on Cabin Creek Road. We met one of the owners at the Community Building and were then led in to the campsite.

Take Highway 14 west from Devils Tower Junction. Turn right/north on Cabin Creek Road toward Oshoto, Wyoming.
